Herbed Beef Stew and Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef stew meat, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3-1/4 cups water, divided
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 3/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp rubbed sage
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 to 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 lb baby carrots
  • 3 medium parsnips , cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 tsp browning sauce , optional
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • dumplings:
  • 1-1/3 cups king arthur unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp minced fresh parsley , optional
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 cup water
