- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 large Eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 4 cups Buttercream frosting
- 2 pounds fondant
- as needed Food coloring (blue, green, and coral colors)
- as desired Decorative edible sea creatures
Instructions
-
Step 1:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
-
Step 2:
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
-
Step 3:
In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
-
Step 4:
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
-
Step 5:
Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
-
Step 6:
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
-
Step 7:
Once cooled, level the tops of the cakes if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top. Repeat with the second layer and top with the third layer.
-
Step 8:
Roll out the fondant and cover the entire cake, smoothing it out to remove any air bubbles.
-
Step 9:
Use food coloring to tint fondant for decorations. Sculpt sea creatures and coral designs, and place them on the cake as desired.
-
Step 10:
Slice the cake and serve it at your ocean-themed celebration. Enjoy your underwater adventure!
